The Solar Panel

The module itself — glass, cells and an aluminium frame. The part everybody pictures when they think “solar,” and the part that fails least often.

Specs & why they matter

  • Typically 400–500 W per module on a residential roof today
  • Tempered glass over crystalline-silicon cells in an anodised aluminium frame
  • Power output is normally warranted for 25 years — the longest-lived part of the system
  • Degrades slowly and predictably, so a sudden drop in production almost never starts here

The Micro-Inverter, Behind the Panel

Turn the module round and there it is: one micro-inverter per panel, tucked up under the top corner of the frame and bolted to the rail by the brackets either side. It converts that panel’s DC to AC right there on the roof.

Specs & why they matter

  • One micro-inverter per panel, bolted to the rail under the top corner of the frame
  • IQ8M peaks at 330 VA, IQ8A at 366 VA; 97–97.5% CEC weighted efficiency
  • Warranted up to 25 years — the longest term on any inverter we service
  • Grid-forming: paired with an IQ System Controller 2 the array can make power in an outage with no battery at all
  • Each panel converts on its own, so shade or a fault on one does not drag the rest of the roof down

The IQ Combiner

Every micro-inverter’s AC run lands in here, on its own breaker, and leaves as one circuit. Behind that plain white door is the box we open first on almost every service call.

The IQ Battery

Storage for what the array makes and the house does not use yet. A slim silver slab with almost nothing on its face — one status light and a wordmark.

  • 3.84 kW continuous, 7.68 kW peak for 3 seconds
  • 15-year warranty, up to 6,000 cycles
  • Six grid-forming micro-inverters are built into each battery
  • Modular — units are added as the load grows rather than sized once at install

The IQ System Controller

The smooth white cabinet next to the battery, and the one that decides what your house does when the grid goes down — islanding the home, running it off the battery, and reconnecting when the utility comes back.

Specs & why they matter

  • The microgrid interconnect device: what physically and legally separates your house from the grid
  • UL 1741 listed for grid-forming operation
  • Without it an Enphase array shuts down in an outage no matter how much sun is on the roof
  • A deep cabinet rather than a thin panel, which is how you tell it from the battery beside it

The IQ EV Charger

The car charger on the wall, fed from the same solar and battery set. When it is wired into the system properly it can charge from what your roof is making rather than from the grid.

Specs & why they matter

  • Up to 48 A / 11.5 kW
  • Talks to the rest of the Enphase system, so the car can be set to charge on surplus solar instead of grid power
  • Hard-wired on its own circuit — the breaker size, not the charger, usually sets the ceiling
